the problem
The gap is not sensing.
Sensing is cheap and already installed. A camera running twenty-four hours a day produces one useful thing: a recording somebody reviews after an incident. An access system produces a log nobody opens. Everything else is discarded.
The gap is interpretation, and until recently interpretation meant a person watching a screen.
how we approach it
The same discipline, applied to a system that fails probabilistically.
Scope stated numerically. A model does not fail absolutely, so "working" has to be defined as a number: which classes, at what precision and recall, under which conditions, measured against which held-out set. That is agreed before training starts, for the same reason an acceptance test is agreed before a signal chain is built.
Evaluated on your data. A model that generalises on a public benchmark and fails on your camera angle is not a deployed system. Evaluation uses a held-out set from the site it will run on.
Structured events, not video. Feeds are processed to event metadata on site: class, time, location, confidence. Frames are not persisted and not transmitted. This is an architectural choice, and it is what makes the systems procurable where retaining identifiable footage is not an option.
Hardware-agnostic. The cameras are already installed, from several manufacturers, on several refresh cycles. A system that only works on one vendor's hardware is the lock-in problem in a new layer.

Glean
The intelligence layer for infrastructure that already has eyes.
Glean grew out of this practice and reaches past it. It reads the feeds an estate already produces - cameras first, then sensors and access systems - and returns structured events: what happened, where, when, and how confident the system is. It runs on premises, in your own cloud, or hosted by us.
Glean is in development. First deployments are traffic and city infrastructure, running against public feeds.
